The SMILE Project is back !
Please check the dates below for Town Clinics and School Presentations schedule.
For those who don't know the program, the SMILE project is a program a
collaboration between San Pancho and the Camosun College Dental Program
(Victoria, British Columbia, Canada). They provide educational presentations at
all the local schools, weekend Dental Clinics at the local Hospital and an
intensive 3 DAY TOWN CLINIC for local residents.
The service includes assessments, thorough cleaning of teeth and gums, fluoride
treatment and consultation -- providing state of the art techniques and
materials. All services are FREE, they come as "ambassadors" of health,
volunteering their skills as part of the Camosun College International program.
Last year was incredibly successful -- they served approx 200 children and 150
adults. And, considering that for many clients, it was the first ever dental
treatment ever experienced, the program hygienist were thrilled to know that the
community was open and willing , despite the laborious work. It was, in the end,
obvious that they return each year! This is good news for San Pancho!
Thank you to all who volunteered hours as "interpreters" and those restaurants
who donated / offered discounts to our "ambassadors" last year. I hope we can
count on you again this year.

Just to add, each year participants of this program actually PAY for their
chance to do this project. They pay for their own flights, housing and food
PLUS contribute to any added costs to implement the project (taxis, group
activities, gifts) while the university CAMOSUN COLLEGE funds educational
materials, treatment/service materials and partial support for the Lead
Instructor/Clinician who leads the group each year. In return, what they
receive is an amazing experience abroad - community service, cultural
exchange and real world application that will enhance their education and
career. This year, Escuela del Mundo, offers logistical and organizational
support (with Hospital, Tercer Edad, all the schools, etc) in preparation
for and during their stay.
I think it's important to know all that so we can all appreciate them even
more!

258-4345.
