The San Pancho Spay and Neuter Clinic
|
For over 10 years San Pancho
volunteers have been working to reduce the
unwanted animal population. Betty McIntyre and Judith Anderson, two
women
committed to animal welfare started the program and over the years
have
enrolled others in this important program.
Today San Pancho has few (if any) "beach" or "street" dogs but we
continue
to educate people on the importance of on-going spaying and
neutering.
In the early days we relied on volunteer vets from the states but
today we
work with PEACE, a non-profit organization in Bucerias and are
typically
able to do two 3-day clinics each year. An average clinic means that
60-70
dogs and cats are sterilized.
Dog statistics
The average dog can have 2 litters per year number litter has 8
puppies
Thus, in 6 years, 1 dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 dogs
Cat statistics
The average fertile cat can have 3 litters per year litter has 5
kittens
Thus, in 7 years, 1 cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 cats
